Besides tacos, we have another reason to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. It's our 15th birthday!
After selling seafood out of the back of my car for six months, the first Kathleen's Catch opened on May 5, 2011 in Johns Creek. The opening had been delayed for a week as we awaited the birth of our grandson, Joel, who arrived on April 28th (and is getting his driving permit this week - look out, Woodstock.)
A Trip Down Memory Lane
The morning of May 5th arrived and I was ready to go. The former pizza place was freshly cleaned and painted. The equipment was installed - all of it pre-owned. My sister and her husband had installed shelves and friends artfully arranged the few sauces and seasonings I had for sale on them. We glued seashells to the used white board for decorations.

My first seafood case. Not very impressive as I had no idea what I was doing.

Check out the prices from 2011. I was told I wouldn't make it with such high prices.

The first customer? Note the map on the wall showing where the fish comes from. I soon realized this changes so often that it was impossible to keep up with.

Another of my sisters washing dishes. One little table to wrap fish on and a tiny freezer on the left wall. I guess I wasn't expecting much.

I really didn't have an idea of what people would buy in a fish market besides fish. I bought a bunch of stuff that didn't sell. Fast moving chocolate bars near the point of sale were definitely not on my radar.
It's hard to believe 15 years have gone by.
Mother's Day
Next weekend is Mother's Day. Now's the time to let me know if you want to reserve some fish for your mom. If you want fresh domestic crabmeat I need to know by Tuesday to get an order in for you to have on Saturday. I'm not sure of the availability of jumbo lump but regular lump is now at $59.95 /lb.
The very best option for you for Mother's Day is our Catch Coastal Boil. Every base is covered so that your planning is minimal and your work is minor. Boil the water, dump in the ingredients (we provide the timing notes), toast the bread. Done.

If you need further proof that this seafood boil is a good idea, here's Kerri's photo of her event. This is the fancy version of a seafood boil and a great dinner for your book club. Kerri's only constructive criticism was "too much stuff!" Otherwise, she said, it was perfect.

FREE Wine Tasting On Saturday, 3:00-5:00 pm! Come see us this weekend for our free wine tasting on Saturday afternoon from 3:00-5:00. Focusing on wines this weekend that are perfect for Spring. All three are great with food or just sipping out on the patio.
Mary Taylor 2024 Anjou Blanc - $18.59 100% Chenin Blanc Loire Valley, France Sourced from vineyards that fall exactly along the border of the two sub-regions of Anjou, this gorgeously subtle white from fourth-generation winemaker Pascal Biotteau comes from the village of Saint-Jean-de-Mauvrets, situated on the old Roman road from Angers to Poitiers. This wine is dry and fruity with refreshing vibrancy. The palate is well balanced, offering a subtle full-bodied texture that brings roundness, beautifully offset by lively, lingering acidity. The finish is long, clean and harmonious, highlighting the elegance and precision of this cuvée.
Skinner 2022 Native Blanc - $24.39 67% Viognier, 33% Vermentino Sierra Foothills, California Native Blanc is a very unique and enjoyable wine. This Rhone blend is made for the senses. Bottled in flint to show the purity of slight greens and soft yellow. Native Blanc captures the nose, delights the mouth with apricot and lemongrass and ends just before a velvety sweetness catches, leaving questions. Fun, mouthwatering with a flirty flare, this heritage blend can be your food’s best friend, or simply a way to cool down on a hot summers evening or a day by the pool. (Ed: I really love this wine.)
Terre Rouge 2016 'Tete-A-Tete' Red Blend - $27.79 Sierra Foothills, California Wine Enthusiast - 90 rating Like the easy-drinking reds of the Southern Rhône Valley, our Mediterranean assemblage, Tête-à-Tête, is blended for current enjoyment both at home and in your favorite bistro. It is a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre, like a French Cotes-du-Rhône. |
And Finally, I was talking to my daughter Sara over her car speaker yesterday while she was driving with all her little chicks. Ellie, who is three, was calling me over and over again during our conversation trying to tell me something very important. When I finally realized it, I stopped talking to Sara to listen to Ellie. Ellie paused a few seconds, long enough for me to think she had forgotten what she needed to say. This was not the case. She was just coming up with the words to say this:
"Today I am a masterpiece."
When you think about it, aren't we all?
Blessings, Kathleen |
