Swordfish, Coffee and On to Thanksgiving
![]() |
Hey Y'all,
A great time was had on Saturday as we celebrated Halloween with our Oysterfest. The wind forced us to take down the tent and put Fred the Scarecrow on the ground instead of on his perch but no one seemed to care. The shucking classes never happened and we apologize for that. However, we are happy to give you a quick personal tutorial if you want to come by when one of our master shuckers is working.
Free Saturday Wine Tasting - 3:00-5:00
Cabernet Sauvignon is the focus tomorrow, specifically from the Southern Hemisphere. As you know, we search for wines that are the best in each price range and these lesser expensive wines fit the bill.
Following last weekend's pairings of wines for our Oysterfest, we decided to keep going with that theme by also sampling another great white wine to serve with oysters (also scallops and other shellfish).
Ringbolt Cabernet Sauvignon- Margaret River, 2021 - $27.79
Western Australia
Wine Spectator - 92
A bold crimson red in color with magenta hues. The nose has rich aromas of violets, black cherries and mulberries with hints of cassis and forest-floor characters. The wine opens with the pretty floral characters of the nose and a rich blackberry edge before progressing to the mocha oak mid palate and finishing with succulent tannins that continue the experience long after the wine has left your mouth.
Primus Cabernet Sauvignon, 2021 - $25.79
Maipo Valley, Chile
Lively aromas of blackberry, blueberry and dried cherry intertwine with vanilla and cedar notes. A smooth silky texture with fine tannins and balance, providing a beautiful and lingering finish.
Les Petites Sardines Muscadet Sevre et Maine, 2024 - $15.29
Muscadet, Loire Valley, France
100% Melon de Bourgogne
The nose, dominated by the fresh aromas brought by the sea spray of the Atlantic, also has light floral notes. The wine is characterized by its finesse and has a slight pearliness that is pleasant on the palate.
I am excited about our new coffee supplier. Really really excited. So excited. Overwhelmingly excited. Really. Very excited. |
As you can see, I sampled lots of coffee this morning...
In keeping with my effort to offer local products on my shelves, Cafe Floralia coffee will be available for purchase in our store starting NEXT weekend, November 15th. Find out how delicious the coffee is by stopping by for complimentary coffee on that day, the 15th, from 10:00-12:00. You will want to be serving this on Thanksgiving morning. If you are traveling for the holidays, tuck a bag in your suitcase for a hostess gift thus insuring an invite for next year.
Swordfish are one of the stars of the sea and call the shots among most smaller fish. Because the sword helps to keep them streamlined, they swim very fast and straight into a school of fish. They don't stab their food - how would they get food from the sword to their mouth? Instead they use the sword by shaking it back and forth and hitting fish or disorienting them until they are stunned. Then they simply circle around and pick up their dinner.
That big mighty fish turns into a firm but sweet, juicy tender masterpiece on your plate. Because it is firm, it is simple to grill or pan sear. Sear it for 3 minutes. Flip and add whatever seasoning and butter you like. Cook 2 more minutes. If it is a thick piece, pop it in a 400 oven for 5 minutes, aiming for 135 degrees. Let it rest a few minutes before serving.

And Finally, Halloween once again renews my faith in humanity. Spend a little time watching the news and you would think we are all a bunch of monsters. On Halloween a lot of us are monsters but in the very best way possible.
If you dressed your kids in adorable costumes and came to my neighborhood, thank you. If you kept your front porch light on to invite children to your door, thank you. If your kids are grown and gone or if you don't have kids at all and you did it anyway, thank you. You made the night a memorable one for the children.
We hear so much anger, name calling and other very bad behavior it is easy to forget how good people can be.
Now - on to Thanksgiving. |
Blessings, Kathleen
