Petrale is from the eastern Pacific, ranging from Baja California to the Aleutian Islands in the Bering Sea. Petrale is a right-eye flounder. Wait, what? Yep. Like other flounder, they are born with an eye on each side of their head. As they grow, one eye migrates over to the other side. Unlike many other flatfish flounders, petrale lie on their left side with their eyes on the right. How to prepare? Stuff, fry, pan-saute, bake - however you like to cook! This kid friendly, mild flavored fillet is flexible!

Back to California this weekend for some classic examples of wine varietals that these AVA's (American Viticultural Area) are known for. With cooler weather around the corner, it seems like time to bring out the Zinfandel!
Ridge Paso Robles, Dusi Ranch Vineyard, 2023 - $46.97
Wine Spectator - 94
Benito Dusi’s Ranch is the only zinfandel vineyard that Ridge sources from within the Central Coast Viticultural Area. The 1967 vintage was our first wine from the Dusi Ranch. It was planted to zinfandel in 1922 which is unusual because Prohibition had started two years earlier. Purchased by Sylvester and Catarina Dusi in 1924, the property has been farmed since the 1940s by their son Benito, the owner. Benito passed away in 2019, leaving the care of the vineyard to his nephew, Mike.
Pedroncelli Mother Clone Zinfandel, 2022 - $23.49
New addition to our assortment. I love Zinfandel and this one is a GREAT value on a highly rated wine.
Wine Spectator - 92 Rating
Pedroncelli Mother Clone is a classic Dry Creek Zinfandel with spicy aromas of cinnamon and white pepper along with red berries and a touch of vanilla. Black cherry flavors blend with vanilla, licorice, and warm baking spices. The berry-spice combination, so typical of Dry Creek Zin, includes a touch of pepper on the rounded finish which is a hallmark of Pedroncelli's style.
Blend: 91% Zinfandel, 9% Petite Sirah
Silverado Sauvignon Blanc- Miller Ranch, 2025 - $22.99
Yountville, Napa Valley, CA
James Suckling - 91 Rating
Estate grown
Miller Ranch Vineyard is south of Yountville, nestled between the Napa River and Hopper Creek. The property was originally a wedding gift to David and Sarah Dunlap from Sarah’s father, and was first planted to vine in the 1870s. Silverado Vineyards purchased the land and restored the vineyards for the estate in 1976. Yolo Loam and Clear Lake Clay drained soils are silty, cool and deep -- perfect for aromatic white wines. Open to the south, the vineyard enjoys the benefit of bay breezes and fog with contribute to the wine’s green citrus and melon notes and bright minerality.
Our 2023 Sauvignon Blanc is a bright and refreshing wine with aromas of stone fruit, lime, and mango. The palate offers abundant citrus flavors with orange blossom, mango, hints of pineapple and pear, and a crisp mineral finish.
October is the month for FRESH SHRIMP!
October is the month when I rent a truck and make a voyage to Brunswick to pick up fresh shrimp for you! This is one of the biggest events of the year for our store so pay attention here. The actual date we are going is kind of a moving target because we are waiting for the fall shrimp to move out of the estuaries and into deeper water. I find it difficult to get into the mind of a shrimp but our great friend, John Wallace, has some serious insight. He says they are now starting to move off shore and should be "bigger and nicer looking" by week after next. We are going to talk again next Friday to firm up the boat's schedules so we know which day to set off for Brunswick.
Here's the plan:
If the shrimp move and grow as they are expected to, we should have them in our store on Friday, October 16th. The size of the shrimp is uncertain but they will definitely be at least 26/30 - the size we got last year and the size we sell now in our store previously frozen. If they are 26/30s, the price will be $13.95/lb.
You need to buy in advance. I will bring back some extra if I have room but if you love these fresh shrimp you need to go ahead and buy online.
FILL UP THE TRUCK! Wild Georgia Shrimp - 1lb.
Fill Up the Truck SPECIAL!! Pre-order and we will bring a truckload of shrimp from Brunswick, GA to our store! Weather permitting, the shrimp should be...

If you have been in our store over the last few years you have probably laid eyes on this person. She is the superstar at the Catch and, because she is not a chatterbox (like me) you probably don't know much about Jamovia Womack.
Jamovia has an appropriate middle name, Nawar, which means flower in Arabic. She was born in Bowling Green, Ohio and will be 24 on her next birthday. She attended Kipp Atlantic Collegiate High School in Atlanta and is the proud mother of two cats, Fig and Miso, both of which she is allergic to. Go figure.
Her boyfriend, Leonox, has recently relocated to Atlanta which makes her a happy person. She has two younger sisters and two roommates.
Jamovia is not a drinker and is almost a pescatarian (she eats chicken). Her favorite fish are sable and red snapper.
Jamovia came to work here in January of 2024. When I interviewed her I knew she was going to be the exceptional employee that she has turned out to be. The thing that impressed me most was her long tenure at her previous job, Panda Express. She was there until she broke her ankle roller skating. To last as long as she did at a place like Panda Express indicated to me that could work hard and have staying power.
The other impression that I had during the interview was that she was very nice and very smart. Bingo! Turns out she is both!
If you see her this weekend, say hello and thank her for being here because I don't know what I would do without her.
And Finally, I have been writing these emails for 16 years so I have probably told this story 10 times. If you have read this, just skip to the "have a great weekend" part.
This weekend's seafood boil brings back a memory from probably 13 or 14 years ago. In an effort to support my struggling business and to entertain his neighborhood, a customer, Charlie, arranged for me to come and cook a seafood boil which his neighbors paid for in advance. The event was held in the neighborhood common area and we were instructed to set up on a stage- like structure so that any children running around would be safe from our boiling water.
Another customer who was a great cook had generously agreed to come and help me since I had never done anything like this before. We also brought along two teenage children of yet another "super customer." Then, like now, I had many supportive customers.
So we show up early and get started. First thing is to get the water boiling. We set up the propane tank stand and fill the big pot with water and crank it up.
We go about getting all our supplies ready. Peeling the corn, cutting the sausage. Everything we need to do to be ready to go when the event started. Periodically we check the water. Not boiling yet but there's still plenty of time.
We set out utensils and serving dishes. Confirm we have enough plates and forks. Check the water. No boil yet. It's starting to get hot though.
An hour passes and it is just about time to start cooking so we will have the potatoes done on time. Still no boil.
Charlie, the guy who arranged it all and put his life on the line, stops in to see how it is going. We wave and say everything is just fine. Still no boil.
Neighbors start arriving. No boil.
Neighbors start drinking to pass the time. No boil.
Neighbors start gathering around the stage, waiting in line for their dinner. Still drinking and still no boil.
Polite sort of catcalls start coming our way as we stand on the stage in full view of all the guests. We sort of huddle and try to look like we are figuring things out even though there really isn't anything we can do to get the water to boil faster.
It's getting dark. Kids have school in the morning. No boil.
A red-faced Charlie gets on the stage, ignores me entirely (and forever after) and apologizes to the now intoxicated crowd. The event is finally and blessedly cancelled.
It's been a long evening. We clean up and go home.
Lesson learned: Good things do not always come to those who wait.
Have a great weekend.
Whew. I was a lot younger then. |
Blessings, Kathleen
