Hey Y'all, If anyone ever doubts the difficulty of being a small seafood retailer, let me remind them of the impact of weather on our business. Hurricane Erin is churning up the Atlantic, making fishing impossible in the northeast. Species such as striped bass, skate wing and black bass will not be available for a short time but, luckily, warmer water fish will be plentiful. In Other News... Unlike shoppers at just about every other grocery retailer, you can ignore recent news on radioactive shrimp because you are a customer of Kathleen's Catch. Rest assured that what's in your refrigerator from the Catch will not glow in the dark. It is wild, Georgia shrimp from Anchored Shrimp Co. in Brunswick, Georgia and has never seen the inside of a shipping container. The radioactive shrimp in the news today comes from Indonesia where BMS Foods allegedly violated the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. The FDA said the product "appears to have been prepared, packed, or held under unsanitary conditions whereby it may have become contaminated with Cs-137 and may pose a safety concern." Not to mention the ewww factor. You have to wonder how long this has been going on... In case you haven't heard about this, here is a link (thanks, Sarah): 11-Alive - Frozen Shrimp Radioactive A little about our shrimp: We are currently selling our wild Georgia shrimp in a size that ranges from 21 to 25 pieces in a lb. We also have these same shrimp peeled and deveined with the tails left on so that you can make a very nice, "glow-free", presentation. |

Live Lobster! This week only, 2 pound lobsters are on sale for $21.95/lb! This is the same price as little1 lb. lobsters so plan something! You have to think a day ahead because I need some notice to bring them in for you. Live lobster are not available for pickup on Sundays. ![]() This is the best price I have seen in a long, long time and it is the only size that is discounted. Call us and leave a deposit and we will have them for you the next day - except Sunday. Sunday is the only day I can't get live lobster because our supplier is closed and I don't keep a tank in my store. Why no tank? It is possible for a lobster to be alive and not fresh. How? A live lobster stops eating once they are out of the ocean so they have to live off the meat inside their shell. You won't be able to tell by looking at it that it is skinny on the inside. To be sure that I sell only the freshest, meatiest live lobster available, I order them daily. And in 15 years of selling lobsters, I have never had a complaint about quality. Wines To Drink With This Week's Special- Swordfish Swordfish has a mild but rich flavor and firm meaty texture. It will pair well with light to medium bodied reds or fuller bodied whites that have a good amount of acidity. Some suggestions: - Cerelli Pecorino - $24.79 - Beau Rivage Bordeaux Blanc - $16.79 - Thulon Beaujolais (Gamay) - $16.99 - Talley Estate Pinot Noir - $40.99 Wines to Drink with This Week's Special - Lobster A French Chenin Blanc from the Loire Valley pairs well with lobster dishes. Notes of pear, quince, and citrus mingle with a stony finish, offering a fruity and mineral essence. Serve these sophisticated white wines with dishes like steamed lobster dipped in butter or Lobster Bisque Mary Taylor Anjou Blanc from Anjou - $18.59 Reserve du Naufraget from Vouvray - $21.79 |
Wines By Mike Mike is back and ready to share some terrific wines with you this Saturday from 3:00-5:00. Here's this week's lineup: Terre Rouge le Cotes de l'Ouest Syrah - $27.79 This is a new addition for us from a great California winery in the Sierra Foothills. Their Syrahs are always highly rated, made in a classic Rhone style and are a great value for the quality. Wine Enthusiast - 93 Rating This dense, concentrated and firmly tannic wine offers pure fruit flavors without a lot of obvious oak spices, so it delivers blackberries, blueberries and dark chocolate from first whiff to lingering finish. While delicious, it's also rather tight in texture and will certainly improve through 2028. — Jim Gordon, Wine Enthusiast Beau Rivage Bordeaux Blanc - $16.97 We picked this one for the tasting partly because it is a perfect pair for the Swordfish that's our special for the week. Another great value wine that's a classic Bordeaux blend of Sauvignon Blanc (crisp with high acidity) and Semillon (full body). Saint Joseph 'La Sybarite' Syrah - $44.59 Aurelien Chatagnier is the owner and winemaker located in the Saint Joseph apellation in the northern Rhone Valley, where he farms about 10 hectares (25 acres). This 2022 Syrah is exceptional but young, so it will benefit from an hour's decanting for all the aromas and flavors to open up. |
And Finally, This week a customer messaged me regarding an order he picked up but he was unable to call because he was at jury duty. It reminded me of something that I probably have mentioned here before but it bears repeating. Many years ago, a member of my family was a victim to a violent crime. It was a terribly traumatic period for us and eventually several people were tried and convicted for the crime. The trials took quite a long time and I was incredibly grateful for the jurors who showed up every day. Many people try to get out of jury duty without thinking about the important role they play in bringing criminals to justice. Just a thought - if you get a summons, do your best to be there and do your part. It's important and it's appreciated. Blessings, Kathleen |
